UPDATE from Kiran: “Bulbul tarang literally “waves of nightingales”, alternately Indian or Punjabi banjo is a string instrument from Punjab which evolved from the Japanese taishōgoto, which likely arrived in South Asia in the 1930s.”
She also sent two example videos of the instrument being played: here and here.
